All India Football Federation president Praful Patel said on May 13, 2012 that he is confident of India bidding successfully for the Under-17 World Cup in 2017 at the FIFA Congress in Budapest later this month.
He made this statement on the sidelines of the official launch function of the federation's first regional academy, housed in Father Agnel's School in Navi Mumbai. 'We are aspiring to host the Under-17 World Cup in 2017. We will bid for it at the FIFA Congress in Budapest. We are quite well-placed to put up a reasonably successful bid,' he said.
FIFA president Blatter, who earlier visited the country termed India as a 'sleeping giant that is slowly waking up". Even though the country lacks infrastructure, Patel who is also Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, saw no issues in the country coming up with a good-enough infrastructure. He said 'I don't see a problem (infrastructure-wise) once we get the bid,' setting examples of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi and the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata capable of hosting the matches.
With abundance of talent ready to take India football by storm, lack of spotting process have been a major obstacle but AIFF's technical director Rob Baan said that a proper scouting system would be put in place soon in all the states.
